WNCN at Welcome to Waterford event, St. Patrick’s Gateway, February 2026

Waterford New Communities Network was delighted to take part in the Welcome to Waterford event at St. Patrick’s Gateway on 18th February 2026.

The WNCN stand was strategically placed beside the Irish Red Cross stand, as our Chairperson, Csilla, was officially representing the Irish Red Cross at the services event.

There were inspiring talks by actor and poet Michael Power, who reminded us of Waterford’s long legacy of welcoming migrants fleeing persecution. He also reminded us that some of these migrants have contributed hugely to making the city what it is today.

One of WNCN’s members, Homayoon Shirzad, originally from Afghanistan, also shared a very inspiring story of his journey to Ireland as a refugee and the tremendous effort he has made to rebuild his life from nothing with his family in Waterford.

He has continued his mission as a dedicated aid worker and public servant, promoting peace, justice, equality, diversity, and humanity for the benefit of Irish society.

The room was filled with warm smiles, positive energy, and a true sense of community. It was inspiring to see so many fantastic services from across Waterford come together to support new communities as they settle in and build their futures here.

A sincere thank you to the Waterford Local Area Integration Team for organising such a warm, welcoming, and well-coordinated event.

We are proud to stand alongside so many dedicated organisations supporting integration, employment, and community development across the city and county.
